Community Health Workers in DR Grow Professionally
With the financial support of Timmy Global Health, Community Health Workers (CHWs) working with our partner Banelino in Montecristi, Dominican Republic recently completed a course on auxiliary nursing from an accredited trade school in Dajabon, a 45 minute drive from Montecristi. Three CHWs and two health support staff spent 12 weeks this year working hard to complete this course. Timmy covered transportation costs and provided suture materials for all that participated.
We are thrilled to know that CHWs strengthened their knowledge on a few topics that are key to their work in the communities: medication and treatment of certain chronic diseases; monitoring of vital signs; how to place an intravenous (IV) line; and how to suture and cure wounds. With this achievement, CHWs will be able to better care for patients, as well as open doors for further training in the healthcare field in the future, if desired. When asked about their vision moving forward, CHWs Miguelina and Dulce both affirmed that their commitment and desire will continue to be advocating for and looking after the wellbeing of patients, especially chronic patients, the elderly, and children.
“I feel very happy and grateful to God first of all because I always dreamed of this, and to Banelino and Timmy who have always supported us, so that we continue to increase our knowledge and provide a better health service to our communities and patients.” - Dulce (Community Health Promoter)
“Completing the auxiliary nursing course has been one of my achievements. It means a lot to me because I can help my communities even more. I learned a lot and my experience was very nice, because I had good classmates and an excellent teacher.” - Miguelina (Community Health Promoter)
"Part of our mission is to strengthen the capacity of our health team; therefore, helping the health team have access to this course allows us to improve the services we provide in our communities, making our service a work of good treatment, attention and improvement of the health of all." - Rosalba Gómez Jáquez (Head of Banelino's health department)
