About Xela

Quetzaltenango, better known by its Mayan name Xela (pronounced “SHAY-la”) is located in Guatemala’s western highlands. The majority of the population is indigenous and still practices subsistence agriculture using methods that predate the Spanish Conquest of 1519.

We support this site through access to clinical care and a nutrition initiative with the help of our partner, 32V. Your donations help patients receive care, purchase medications, support the salaries of local health care workers and supports the nutrition initiatives. .

Carmen Benítez, is a Guatemalan Medical Doctor specialized in Genetics and Molecular Engineering, and Nutrigenomics as well as in Monitoring and Evaluation for food sovereignty. Carmen is the co-founder and Director at 32 Volcanoes, our partner In Guatemala, where she's been working since 2012 in coordination with Timmy Global Health to develop programs that are culturally competent to the context in the 3 different areas where we work. She has designed the nutrition - and food sovereignty program, chronic patients program, and participated in programs such as clean water for the world; as well as being one of the local doctors. When she's not working, she enjoys the movement of the spirit and body, with yoga, reading, hiking, travelling around the world, or singing and playing music.

Escarleth Lorena Pérez Rivera was born in Guatemala. She attended the San Carlos de Guatemala University, where she pursued her career as a doctor and surgeon. She also participated in providing medical care at various hospitals and communities in the region. After completing her university studies, she became a volunteer in the medical brigades held by Timmy Global Health and the 32 Volcanes Association. In January 2020, she formally began working in the 32 Volcanes Association as the doctor in charge of the clinical area, attending to patients of the various programs. She is described as a charismatic and energetic person, an unparalleled physician who gives her heart to each patient, fighting tirelessly for the patient to be well cared for and well educated. She likes providing care to communities where patients have identified with her on many occasions, quickly gaining the trust of all.

32 VOLCANES

Timmy Global Health and 32 Volcanes (32V) have had a partnership since 2007. 32 Volcanos is a Guatemalan non-profit association that seeks social and environmental sovereignty and well-being through cultural transformation of life. They work in collaboration with the Mathile Institute.
