About Montecristi

Montecristi is a rural coastal community near the Northwestern border of Haiti. There are five communities -- Maguaca, Walterio, Isabel, Jaramillo, and Madre -- known as bateys in this region. Each community has 600 inhabitants, who are primarily Haitian migrants or Dominicans of Haitian descent. Goats can be seen wandering around many of these communities, as they are another source of income for some families and serve as a specialty dish in this area of the country.  Family and community are highly valued and regular social gatherings often include music, religious worship, or games and sports such as dominoes, baseball, basketball, or soccer.

Dr. Juana Maria Gomez was born in Montecristi, Dominican Republic. Since she was young, she dreamed to be a doctor for in order to improve the health services. She studied medicine at the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) where she concluded her studies as a Doctor of Medicine. She now works as an Integrated Health Doctor for the BANELINO Health program, which supports Timmy in the rural communities. She hopes to expand her knowledge in public health and epidemiology to improve the services provided to her patients.

Outside of providing care, she enjoys reading, practicing zumba, going to the beach, and being around her family and friends

Banelino

We work directly with Banelino, a Fair Trade association made up of small banana farm producers. Banelino guarantees year-round banana sales at a fair price, while also investing in programs to improve the health and welfare of the local community. We provide support for Banelino’s medical center, which provides basic consults, emergency visits, lab services, dental care, and pharmaceutical services to workers and their families. Patients are also referred to specialists working in Mao and the nearby city of Santiago at both public and private facilities. We, alongside Baneilno, have established strong ties of collaboration with private and public facilities in the region to ensure the most adequate care for their patients.
