Timmy Eye Surgery Brigade

We had an overwhelming response to the community outreach in Nigeria through our Eye Surgery Brigade. We have 105 patients with operable cataracts.

Through our work in this community, we found an entire family with congenital cataracts. For the baby, this requires an urgent cataract surgery to avoid developing amblyopia (the retina doesn't develop normally, and the eye goes lazy).

An excited beneficiary of the free cataract surgical outreach thanking our Chief Medical Director, Prof Sylvanus Okogbenin, who has supported this outreach by waiving the surgical fee and consenting to allow the theatre facilities of the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital to be used freely and permitting the Ophthalmology department to provide the outreach

Funding for the project came from the Rotary Club of Indianapolis World Community Service Committee, the Indianapolis Links, Inc., and our co-founders Drs. Chuck Dietzen and Mercy Obeime. In addition, a group of Uromi sons and daughters known as Uromi General Hospital Global Rehabilitation Project, Inc. has collaborated with Timmy Global Health and Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital to provide on the ground logistics support. They have transported patients to appointments and helped many patients overcome financial barriers that could have made it impossible to benefit from this program. Many have described it as another sign of God answering our prayers.
