Timmy Chapter Spotlight: University of Pittsburgh

Timmy Chapter Spotlight: University of Pittsburgh
February 27, 2017 Callie Daniels-Howell

Each week we spotlight one of our fine college or high school chapters doing amazing work both locally and globally. Our chapters work to accomplish the three pillars of a Timmy Chapter: Advocacy, Service, and Fundraising. This week we are taking a look at The University of Pittsburgh!

Give us an update–what are some recent events you have done, or goals you have achieved?

Our goal this semester was to increase membership participation and to really get some good low-budget fundraising ideas started. Ali, the chapter trip planner, had the idea to gather and decorate donations cans and go to campus basketball games to collect donations. We had a nice turn-out for can decoration meetings, and our members made us the most colorful organization collecting donations at every basketball game, which certainly helped with collections!

What events or goals are you gearing up for in the near future? What are your plans to make these happen successfully?

Now that we are wrapping up our canning fundraiser, we wanted to move to food sales. A lot of organizations on campus do them and have gotten pretty creative. Many do bake sales and sell food in buildings with large classes but they have yet to cater to active organizations on campus. We have some members in athletic organizations that think it could do us some good to sell food during lesser known (but still popular) sporting events like Frisbee tournaments.

Is your chapter heading out on a trip soon? How is that part of your chapter preparing, and how is the rest of your chapter supporting the trip?

Yes! We are taking our pilot trip this year! Our Trip Planner, Ali, is a Spanish minor, so she and the member who is going along with her, Lydia, are practicing and reviewing conversational and medical Spanish terms. In addition, Ali has been to the Dominican Republic before to volunteer so she’s briefing Lydia on what to expect and how to best use time.

What kind of assistance or support do you need? This is your platform to reach out! (Ex: Medical professionals for a trip, fundraising or event ideas from other chapters, participation in an event, etc.)

We could always use more low-budget (and unique) fundraising ideas!

What are you most excited for during your year with Timmy?

I’m excited to see how we can increase our impact on campus! We’re a very new organization here at Pitt and I’m ready to see us grow in the Pittsburgh community and on our campus.
