Timmy Chapter Spotlight: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Timmy Chapter Spotlight: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
February 6, 2017 Callie Daniels-Howell

Each week we spotlight one of our fine college or high school chapters doing amazing work both locally and globally. Our chapters work to accomplish the three pillars of a Timmy Chapter: Advocacy, Service, and Fundraising. This week we are taking a look at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign!

Give us an update–what are some recent events you have done, or goals you have achieved?

We hosted a late night pizza sale on campus during Dad’s weekend at the end of last semester, which was a successful fundraiser. For community service, we made doggy toys out of T-shirts and donated them to the local animal shelter and we sold cookies on the quad. Over winter break we had our brigade to Santo Domingo, Ecuador, where we saw hundreds of patients.

What events or goals are you gearing up for in the near future?  What are your plans to make these happen successfully?

We are having a Timmy Bar Crawl and are raising money by selling shirts with a fun logo. To make this successful, we are using our network within social sororities and fraternities to reach out to their friends to raise money. We also plan for the entire Timmy Club to take a trip to the local food pantry and help out on during their busiest day of the week.

Is your chapter heading out on a trip soon? How is that part of your chapter preparing, and how is the rest of your chapter supporting the trip?

We recently went on a trip over winter break to Santo Domingo, Ecuador. To prepare we spent the majority last semester planning fundraisers and collecting vitamins for our trip. We also shared many fliers to recruit medical professionals to attend the trip with us.

What kind of assistance or support do you need?

It would be great to hear from other growing chapters as to which types of fundraising events work best for them. For example, our cookie sale did not raise as much money as we had hoped, so we are looking for better ways to fundraise on campus.  We are also in the process of looking for medical professionals for future trips, it would be great if anyone has any advise on recruitment!

What are you most excited for during your year with Timmy?

The Global Medical Brigades are always the best part. I think that student who have been on the trips are the ones that feel most invested in the club afterwards. The executive board is also excited for the leadership conference this year since we weren’t able to attend last year.

Anything else you would like to share with us?

We are hoping to have a guest speaker talk to our chapter this semester. We are thrilled for a new Timmy year. We have big goals to increase our membership!
