Timmy Chapter Spotlight: Purdue University

Timmy Chapter Spotlight: Purdue University
January 30, 2017 Callie Daniels-Howell

Each week we spotlight one of our fine college or high school chapters doing amazing work both locally and globally. Our chapters work to accomplish the three pillars of a Timmy Chapter: Advocacy, Service, and Fundraising. This week we are taking a look at Purdue University!

Give us an update–what are some recent events you have done, or goals you have achieved?
Last semester, we raised almost $4000 for Focusing Philanthropy Initiative! This semester, we started off with our annual Benefit Concert featuring Stay Outside, Rival Summers, Shinny Penny, and Mike Mains and the Branches, where we raised over $1300. All of this makes strides to help us reach our fundraising goal. Over last semester, we’ve been working hard towards our donation goals as well and have collected 300 bottles of pain relievers, 10,000 capsules of vitamins, and other supplies for our trips. All of this is in thanks to our AWESOME executive committee, sub-committees, and Timmy members!!

What events or goals are you gearing up for in the near future? What are your plans to make these happen successfully?
We are gearing up for a long list of advocacy events this semester, including our Global Health Week featuring a Global Health Panel, as well as a Reproductive and Sexual Health Resource Fair with several other student organizations. Our development committee has a lot of new events that they are working on, including a Timmy Global Health Escape Room! We also have our largest fundraising and advocacy event, the Annual Banquet and Silent Auction coming up in March after our Ecuador and Atlanta trip. This year’s theme is Small Things with Great Love; and we’re happy to have Dr. Chuck be there to talk! We are really excited for a great semester of Purdue Timmy!

Is your chapter heading out on a trip soon? How is that part of your chapter preparing, and how is the rest of your chapter supporting the trip?
Our trip leaders and trip goers are working hard preparing for our trip in mid-March over spring break to Quito, Ecuador and to Atlanta, Georgia. We will be gearing up to go to Trip Retreat in a couple of weeks. With all our donation days, we’re on track to meet our donation goals for the trip! We are also working on a donation drive for our Atlanta trip and the local non-profits we serve there. All in all, we can’t wait for the trip!

What kind of assistance or support do you need? This is your platform to reach out! (Ex: Medical professionals for a trip, fundraising or event ideas from other chapters, participation in an event, etc etc)

We will be trying to launch some global health online advocacy initiatives during our Global Health Week as well as before some of our fundraising events and would love to have other chapters and HQ participate. Additionally, we are always looking for new ideas for fundraising as well as initiatives for member leadership development and chapter long-term growth.

What are you most excited for during your year with Timmy?

We are really excited to be making strides to expand the Timmy chapter and seeing all the new ways we can advocate for Timmy around campus!
