Each week we spotlight one of our fine college or high school chapters doing amazing work both locally and globally. Our chapters work to accomplish the three pillars of a Timmy Chapter: Advocacy, Service, and Fundraising. This week we are taking a look at Bellarmine University!
Give us an update–what are some recent events you have done, or goals you have achieved?
This semester, the Bellarmine University chapter has strived to increase their fundraising creativity. This led the chapter to develop plans for Timmy Global Health’s “Wreck a Wrecker” event (see photo). In this event, the executive board purchased a totaled car and had it towed to campus where it was spray painted with local health disparities of our partner site in Mao, Dominican Republic. Students and faculty were then able to donate 5 dollars or a bottle of vitamins to sink a sledgehammer into some health disparities. Many students and faculty members came to hit our car and we were able to raise about three hundred dollars worth of vitamins to send with our chapter in May. We are extremely proud of this inaugural event and excited to watch it expand over the coming years.
What events or goals are you gearing up for in the near future? What are your plans to make these happen successfully?
Our next goal is to successfully recruit our share of medical professionals for our trip in May to Mao, Dominican Republic. We have followed up with many doctors and reached out to nurses. We have success with nurse recruitment, but we plan to travel to different practices around the area and ask, face-to-face, local Louisville physicians.
Is your chapter heading out on a trip soon? How is that part of your chapter preparing, and how is the rest of your chapter supporting the trip?
Our chapter is looking forward to a new partner site in the Dominican Republic. We are preparing for this large change by reading up on the guide book and hosting monthly trip meetings to keep everyone on the same page. In our meetings, we discuss the importance and responsibility of finding med profs for our trip. We also, individually, go over everyone’s personal flight information, immunization records, passport, etc. to make sure they are good to go. We also discuss the scholarship opportunities and other fundraising techniques if needed.
What kind of assistance or support do you need? This is your platform to reach out!
We would love to have some help with medical professional recruitment. This tends to be a challenging aspect of the trip preparations and we have already implemented the tactics that have worked for our trip members in the past. Some of the methods we have utilized include; emailing medical professionals in the community, writing letters to family physicians, and shadowing various physicians in order to ask them to take part in the trip.
What are you most excited for during your year with Timmy?
The year is almost over! Our chapter seniors are excited to pass on the Timmy torch and watch these next leaders take the stage and further improve and develop the chapter.
