The Value of Spokes in the Wheel

The Value of Spokes in the Wheel

The-Value-of-SpokesWalking into the Indianapolis office this morning, I was quickly passed by a biking commuter. The rapidly spinning wheels reminded me of the positive forward motion Timmy Global Health is experiencing as an organization. Expansion into new sites, continued standardization of practices, our Medical Advisory Committee, an office full of talented and eager summer interns, Timmy 2.0, TimmyCare expansion, the search for our new Executive Director, and more. But at the end of the day, we can’t move forward without the essential spokes that keep the wheels of our programs turning. Below are just a few recent updates on the critical spokes that keep Timmy’s work rolling onward.

Continued Continuity of Care – We’re just starting to wrap up our May/June medical service trips to each of our international sites. One story from a Timmy patient in the Dominican Republic captures the true value added of our patient referral system and the consistent return trips we make. Download our medical trip reports to learn more about the impact of each of our teams.

Transforming Lives – The SANNA surgical trip is underway in San Salvador, bringing desperately needed reconstructive surgeries to pediatric burn patients, and providing specialized care for a number of other severe cases. Click to learn more about our partnership with SANNA and the growing surgical program.

Public Health Impact – In May, a small group of six students accompanied MedWater & our Timmy Safe Water Coordinator to the community of Los Rios, Ecuador to teach communities about water & sanitation hygiene education, conduct household surveys, and install a water chlorinator in collaboration with the community water council. Over 350 residents now have access to safe drinking water!

Local Outreach – Locally, Timmy’s partnership with IU Health’s Garden on the Go program is providing fresh fruits and vegetables to food deserts in the Indianapolis area. As this relationship continues to develop, Timmy’s Indianapolis staff is preparing to serve as volunteers on the mobile grocery truck later this summer.

Events & Fundraising – Fun Timmy summer event planning is underway! Get your team together and join us for local beer and global food at our Taste of the World Trivia night at the Athenaeum on Friday, August 8. Then plan to tee up for our 100 Holes for Timmy Golf Marathon at Broadmoor Country Club on Monday, September 29.

Student Impact – Our programs team is busy prepping for Timmy’s 2014 Student Leadership Conference this fall. The capstone event will be an evening Conversation on Global Health held at IUPUI’s Hine Hall on Saturday, September 6. The event is open to the public!

A Tight Fiscal House – Year-end financial wrap up, budgeting, and audits are making sure that each dollar donated is going to work responsibly. Timmy 2.0 (our strategic plan for the coming year) puts funds into the critical programmatic pieces of our local partners, community health promoters, in-country physicians who work to deliver our continuity of care between trips, TimmyCare, and our strong patient referral program. Stay tuned for our summer appeal launching mid-July!

To wrap up, I take this moment to thank our incredible Timmy staff, who are master builders of the spokes. To our Medical Programs Coordinators and managers living overseas, thank you for your energetic ability to accomplish our on the ground mission with initiative, optimism and a lot of hard work while living in remote corners of the world. To our Indy staff, thank you for your energy, grand ideas, and meticulous execution of details. You’re all amazing and appreciated each and every day.

Onward,
Charla

P.S. A little known fact – this Indy office used to be a bicycle repair shop!
