OUR COMMUNITIES: MONTE CRISTI & MAO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Monte Cristi is a rural coastal community near the Northwestern border of Haiti. Mao is an urban town northwest of Santiago. While the make-up and size of these areas differ, a lack of health access persists – especially for the large population of Haitian migrants that have traveled to these areas looking for work. Many of the communities that Timmy serves across these sites are bateys—and are the most traditionally impoverished and underserved areas of the country.
OUR PARTNER: BANELINO
Banelino is a fair-trade banana cooperative operating in both Mao and Monte Cristi. The company’s objective is to guarantee year-round banana sales at a fair price, while also allowing employees and their families to live dignified lives. Beyond the production and sale of bananas, Banelino designates a portion of their annual profit to fund social programs for employees. These programs include regular primary care consultations by a traveling physician, access to affordable medicine and health education, and housing infrastructure projects.
