Sarah is Timmy’s Development and Communication Manager in Indianapolis, IN. She has been with the organization since May 2012 and is thrilled to be wrapping up another great year with Timmy Global Health. This blog post highlights Timmy’s exciting year-end matching gift campaign with Focusing Philanthropy, and pauses to reflect on what the spirit of giving is all about. Read more about Timmy’s growing relationship with Focusing Philanthropy in our Recipient Announcement blog post.

As we near the end of another year, I’ve been taking some time to look back and reflect on how much Timmy has grown in the last 12 months. It’s incredible for me to think that this time last year I was sitting on the couch, with my heart beating out of my chest and my eyes glued to the TV screen, watching Timmy’s Founder and Executive Director accept a $250,000 grant at the Chase American Giving Awards—a national celebration of nonprofits that was broadcast to more than a million viewers on NBC.

As a staff, we’d spent most of November and the early parts of December transforming our office into a voting center that could rival a political campaign—doing everything we could to generate public support for Timmy in the online voting portion of the contest. Our incredible student leaders, Timmy alumni, medical professional volunteers, and supporters from Indianapolis and other places across the country and around the world came out of the woodworks to show their support by voting and encouraging others to do the same. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay and Colts punter Pat McAfee were tweeting about it. Gustavo Galindo, Latino music heartthrob, was helping us to get out the vote to thousands of followers online. Clear Channel Outdoor donated digital ad space on billboards around the city of Indianapolis to help market the voting process. And Mercedes Soler, host of Notimujer on CNN en Español, broadcasted a direct ask for votes to all of her viewers!

Finally, after months of hard work, the night of the awards show was upon us. And as I watched the confetti fall and the crowd cheer, I couldn’t help thinking, “Wow, this is the single largest donation that Timmy Global Health has ever received.” And it was! In the last year, the additional funding we received at the AGA’s has played a critical role in helping Timmy grow our student chapters, launch our Hank Benjamin Memorial Scholarship initiative, invest in our own electronic medical record Timmycare, cultivate a new surgical program, research a safe water solution in Ecuador, and provide quality healthcare services to more patients, families, and communities than ever before.

But as I celebrate our success of the past year, I also look ahead to 2014 and think of how much work we still have to do to ensure that everyone—regardless of who they are, what resources they have, or where they live—has access to the quality healthcare services they deserve.

This is where you come in. Although the excitement of last year’s American Giving Awards has all but died down, we have yet another incredible opportunity to bolster Timmy’s work for the coming year!

Focusing Philanthropy, an organization that identifies, evaluates, and presents high-impact nonprofits to a network of donors, has graciously agreed to match up to $50,000 of contributions made to Timmy Global Health via their donation page through the end of the year. That means 100% of every donation to Timmy Global Health’s programming will be doubled! A $5 gift becomes $10, a $50 donation becomes $100, and slowly but surely, we could raise $100,000 in support for Timmy’s programming in 2014.

Giving is simple, safe, and secure.

1. Just use this link to visit the Focusing Philanthropy donate page and select Timmy Global Health as the intended recipient.

2. Choose your payment method (check, credit card, or wire transfer) and enter the amount you would like to give.

3. Click submit to double your impact on Timmy’s work!

100% of contributions made through the Focusing Philanthropy website will be disbursed to Timmy Global Health. And so far we’ve already raised upwards of $33,000 towards the match! But there’s still $17,000 of matching contributions available through December. If you’re considering making a year-end donation to Timmy Global Health, I encourage you to donate via the Focusing Philanthropy website.

We all have a chance to give the gift of health this holiday season. $98 helps a Timmy patient get through the patient referral process. $50 ensures that 5 Timmy patients can get the x-rays they need. $28 pays for three years of hypertension medication for a chronic patient. And for a few more weeks, you can double your impact on Timmy’s programming!

Thanks for your generous consideration and for all of the support you give to Timmy throughout the year. If you have any questions about your year-end gift, please contact me via email at sarah@timmyglobalhealth.org. May you have a very happy and healthy holiday season.

UPDATE (January 15, 2014): Special thanks to everyone that supported our year-end matching gift campaign with Focusing Philanthropy! Thanks you your incredible support, we met and surpassed our fundraising goal of $100,000! With your year-end gifts, Timmy is better positioned than ever before to tackled today’s most pressing global health challenges in 2014.
